Publication ethics and scientific integrity policy

1. Authorship
2. Peers
3. Scientific integrity
4. Retractions
5. Open access
6. License of use and copyright

The Revista Criterios takes as a reference the guidelines on ethics and good editorial practices of the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics), whose purpose is to ensure the implementation of ethical practices in research, good editorial practices, prevent inappropriate behavior and promote scientific quality, so that they are assumed as a cultural rule by society.

  1. Authorship

All persons who appear in a manuscript are classified as authors, since it is understood that they have made written contributions both to the research and to the preparation of the manuscript, i.e., there is a shared responsibility when the article contains errata (errors), fraud (false results), plagiarism (copying of another) or self-plagiarism (copying of oneself). Plagiarism is unacceptable conduct, is considered a serious breach of professional ethics, and carries legal and criminal penalties.

After the initial submission of a manuscript, the addition, deletion or change in the order of authors is not accepted, since it is the duty of the publishing entity as well as the authors to ensure proper ethical conduct.

Basic criteria for authorship

The Council of Science Editors (CSE), heir since 2000 to the Council of Biology Editors (Ruíz-Pérez, Marcos-Cartagena, & Delgado, 2014), establishes authorship when one has participated in:

  • The idea and design of the study.
  • In the acquisition or analysis of the data.
  • In the drafting of the article or its intellectual critical review.
  • In the final approval of the manuscript to be published.

Note: data collection or other routine tasks are not enough to achieve authorship rights, these people who participate in data collection are recognized for their work by mentioning them in the acknowledgements, thus, they obtain their respective credits.

General criteria for authorship

1. The order of appearance of the authors will be respected, according to the order designated at the time of submission of the manuscript, since this is a joint decision of the co-authors.
2. It is the authors' responsibility to provide full names and their correct spelling, in order to eliminate later confusion. It is recommended to standardize your signature (Iralis) and use your pen name correctly, so that it does not affect the citation index or obtaining the respective credits.
3. Students and graduate work advisors may appear as authors if their participation complies with the basic criteria for authorship set forth above.

Editorial UNIMAR, as the publishing entity, reserves the right to reject the manuscript when it has been submitted to the journal and does not comply with the guidelines for authors of the Revista Criterios or the Policy of Ethics and Scientific Integrity in Publication. It should be clarified that under no circumstances will the withdrawal of an article during any phase of the editorial process be accepted, since the different processes and procedures require financial and human resources, which must be used to the maximum and which are assumed by this unit.

Contribution

Authors should identify the level of writing contribution and contribution to the manuscript, in order to establish the order of appearance.

Transparency

Authors should declare the source of their research funding.

Originality

Manuscript that has not been published or accepted in another publication. The author must declare in the established. format (Format 3: Partial use license) that the manuscript will not be sent partially or completely, simultaneously or successively, to other journals or publishing entities, during the evaluation process carried out by the Criteria Journal.

Plagiarism

Applicant manuscripts will be submitted to the anti-plagiarism software implemented by Editorial UNIMAR, those that exceed the 20% coincidence rate will be immediately discarded. In those cases where minor citation difficulties are identified, they will receive the respective commentary and support to continue the evaluation process.

Conflicts of interest

Authors must declare whether they have conflicts of interest: financial (financial support: money, payments in kind or any type of support), personal (friendship or enmity), political (party membership), intellectual (not agreeing with the editorial line of the journal), racist, religious, etc. (Graf et al., 2010).

Duplicate or multiple publications

Duplicate publication is understood as that manuscript or part of a manuscript, which has been published previously and has ISSN or ISBN as a result of participation in forums, meetings, congresses, among others, therefore, will not be taken into account for evaluation and will be withdrawn at the moment in which this situation is known.

Keep in mind that, although several products can be generated from one research, this does not mean that several publications showing the same results, with minimal and non-significant changes, are allowed. In this case, the author should make a different writing process for each article he/she wishes to present. In addition, publication with salami effect should be avoided, where research results are divided into several manuscripts, which only deteriorates the quality of the manuscript.

The intentional submission or resubmission of a paper to more than one journal is considered a breach of editorial ethics, therefore, a serious misconduct.

  2. Peers

A peer reviewer is characterized by carrying out a rigorous, clear and formal evaluation.

It is their duty to inform the editor in those cases where there is suspicion of plagiarism, self-plagiarism and/or fraud, i.e., copying, self-copying, falsification or manipulation of the research results.

You may not make use of the information in the manuscript you are evaluating (such as disclosure of results prior to publication, or disclosure of the concepts developed) for personal benefit, make it known or make it available for the benefit of any other person or organization.

If in the reading of the work you find any ethical impediment or conflict of interest that may affect the issuance of the concept, you must inform the editor so that he/she can reassign the document to another peer reviewer.

   3. Scientific Integrity

The Criteria Journal welcomes the Singapore Declaration, which emerged from the 2nd World Conference on Research Integrity, held from July 21 to 24, 2010, in Singapore. The principles and responsibilities in relation to scientific integrity are taken from it.

Considering that there is a close relationship between the Singapore Declaration on Research Integrity and, therefore, publications, it is essential to ensure and promote a clear and responsible culture, permeated by ethics and good publishing practices.

In the field of scientific research, according to Casado et al. (2016), integrity is primarily imposed as a “duty, as an ethical-legal requirement common to most codes of ethics” (p. 48) and is defined “from the identification and characterization of specific situations that constitute actual risks of violation of such integrity” (p. 48).

Principles

  • Honesty in all aspects of research.
  • Accountability in the conduct of research.
  • Professional courtesy and fairness in working with others.
  • Good stewardship of research on behalf of others.

Responsibilities

Integrity: investigators should be held accountable for the honesty of their investigations.

Compliance with regulations: investigators should be aware of and comply with regulations and policies related to research.

Research methods: researchers should apply appropriate methods, base their conclusions on a critical analysis of the evidence, and report their findings and interpretations fully and objectively.

Documentation of research: researchers should maintain clear and accurate documentation of all research so that others can verify and reproduce their work.

Research results: researchers should share data and results openly and without delay, as soon as they have established priority over their use and ownership.

Authorship: researchers should take responsibility for their contributions to all publications, funding requests, reports, and other forms of presenting their research. Lists of authors should include all those who meet the applicable criteria for authorship and only those who meet the applicable criteria.

Acknowledgements in publications: researchers should mention in publications the names and roles of those who have made significant contributions to the research, including editors, sponsors, and others who do not meet the criteria for authorship.

Peer review: when evaluating the work of others, researchers should provide impartial, prompt and rigorous evaluations and respect confidentiality.

Conflicts of interest: researchers should disclose any conflicts of interest, financial or otherwise, that compromise the reliability of their work, in research proposals, publications, and public communications, as well as in any evaluation activity.

Reporting of irresponsible research practices: researchers should report to the appropriate authorities any suspected research misconduct, including fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, or other irresponsible practices that compromise their reliability, such as negligence, incorrect listing of authors, failure to report conflicting data, or use of misleading analytical methods.

Response to irresponsible research practices: Research institutions, journals, professional organizations and agencies with research commitments should have procedures in place to respond to allegations of misconduct or other irresponsible research practices, as well as to protect those who in good faith report such behavior (World Conferences on Research Integrity, 2021). If professional misconduct or other irresponsible research practice is confirmed, appropriate action should be taken immediately, including correction of research documentation. (World Conferences on Research Integrity, 2021)

   4. Retractions

The Revista Criterios follows the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) regarding retractions, ensuring the integrity and scientific quality promoted by the journal. Therefore, the Editor or Editorial Committee will retract any document in which one of the following cases is identified:

1. Clear evidence that the results are not reliable: falsification of data, computational or experimental errors and/or data fabrication.
2. Evidence of plagiarism.
3. Duplicate or multiple publication, i.e., the results have been published previously and there is no permission or justification to republish them.
4. Materials or data without authorization for use.
5. Copyright infringement or other legal problem.
6. Manipulation of the peer review process.
7. When the authors have not informed that there is a conflict of interest and the editor considers that this would have affected the interpretations of the work.
